"Art and I do not know for sure who we are, but we are sure that we are from each other and that's all we need for life." Alberto Carneiro is an artist who has developed a unique relationship between art and nature. His entire artistic production is intertwined with his own life.
He was born in São Mamede Coronado, Trofa, in 1937.
In 1947, he began his artistic apprenticeship in an image-maker's shop, where he worked for 11 years. He completed his high school studies at the Soares dos Reis School of Decorative Arts, in Oporto, and at the António Arroio School, in Lisbon.
In 1961 he returned to Oporto to study sculpture at the School of Fine Arts. After completing his degree in 1967, he left to London where he attended a graduate at Saint Martin's School of Art. There he was a student of the sculptor Anthony Caro and of his most famous disciple, Philip King. Between 1975 and 1976, years in which he studied the shapes and aesthetic procedures resulting from tilling the soil, he received a scholarship from the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation.
His artistic activity began in the seventies. He was a sculpture professor at the School of Fine Arts in Oporto, took over the Arts Circle of Coimbra University artistic and pedagogical direction and taught at the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Oporto.
He is the author and co-author of texts and books on art and pedagogy and participated in courses, workshops and seminars on art and body dynamics. He also devoted himself to the study of Deep Psychology, Zen, Tantra and Tao, subjects on which he taught courses, gave lectures and wrote.
Throughout his career made field trips to several countries. In the nineties traveled through India, Nepal, China and Japan, where he sought to deepen his knowledge on Hinduism, Taoism, Zen and Tantric manifestations and gardens.
Alberto Carneiro held more than seventy solo exhibitions and participated in over one hundred group exhibitions in Portugal and abroad. Several Portuguese and foreign cities exhibit the sculptor works publicly. This sculptor was awarded various prizes and distinctions and is represented in numerous museums and collections in the country and abroad.
